Get to know the Green Kids School project!

In 2019, an Innovation and Improvement program began to be developed in the community of the rural area of Ayampe (Ecuador). The Project aimed at eradicating the traditional problems of rural schools, such as school absenteeism or the lack of specialists and resources.

The success of the initiative, promoted and directed by Sergio Carneros, collaborator of the UNESCO Chair in Education for Social Justice, has achieved that, in 2020, another five communities joined the projet to transform their schools, to turn them into an engine of community development and to achieve greater Social and Environmental Justice.

One of those schools is the Green Kids School in Puerto La Boca, Manabí, Ecuador. In 2014, the federal school in Puerto La Boca closed, referring students to a center 7 kilometers from their community. The lack of public transport makes it difficult for students to attend school, so the Puerto la Boca project seeks to build a sustainable infrastructure on land that has been donated by the community members themselves.

The school is designed to have the least possible environmental impact. Thus, it will have open classrooms and will be built with materials from the area. That the students learn that appreciating and respecting the environment is important for their future is one of the keys of the project.

In addition, the integral transformation of the school is pursued. Through the Ayampe Model and the ChanGo Method, the Escuelas Comunitarias Unidas project promotes a community approach to contribute to social change and the formation of a fairer quality school.

Thus, the Green Kids School of Puerto La Boca intends to promote a democratic, respectful, active, and collaborative education that helps students to become tranformative agents. To learn more about the Project and to collaborate, visit its website www.greenkidsschool.com
